Frau Melgar has been teaching at Westwood High School since 2010, but has been with Round Rock ISD since 2000 with only the 2006-2007 school year in a different school district. She went to school in Houston, TX, first going to Sterling Aviation Sciences, but then transferred to her zoned school, Sharpstown in her junior year. This is where she first started taking German having already studied Spanish since middle school. After a semester at St. Edward's University, the amazing German Professor, Dr. Harald Becker convinced her to change her major to International Studies with a minor in German. Then during her junior year, it was off to Universität Trier. Trier is where she really began to grow her language skills and truly take in the German culture. After a year abroad there was no "just having a minor" in German, so she transferred to University of Texas at Austin. She received her BA in German with a minor in History in 1997. In 2017 Frau Melgar was named German Teacher of the Year by the Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA) as well as Foreign Language Teacher of the Year. With this honor she moved up to the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT), where she was honored with the 2018 Southwest Region Foreign Language Teacher of the Year. In November of 2018, she will be interviewing / competing at the national level for American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) Teacher of the Year.
Frau Melgar loves to travel, and does so as much as she financially can. Every even year is reserved for traveling with her students to Gersthofen, Germany where she has led students on an exchange program (GAPP) with students from the Paul Klee Gymnasium since 2007. She has also been fortunate enough to lead students to Japan in 2013. And since her husband is from El Salvador, she enjoys traveling there to visit family and practice her Spanish.
Other travel includes following her other passion, the 2017 World Series Champions, the Houston Astros. She and her husband try to go to another city in the US to see the Astros play each year. If Frau Melgar ever decides to change professions, it will be to be an MLB Official Scorekeeper!
Some of her other loves include her four dogs and one cat, swimming, and bowling.
